I can only speculate why there was still snow in late June - must be the number of hours of daylight it's exposed to in combination with the strong winds keeping the temperature down. Point of interest: if you look closely you can see the trail we came up. At the fork, the route on the right follows the Appalachian Trail - the one on the left is simply a different path on the same mountain.
